14.09.23 - Dialogue for the Future "Net Zero": A view on the event

The topic was “Energy Net Zero”, which refers to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities as much as possible and offsetting the rest completely. Net Zero is thus necessary to stop climate change. In this year's "Future Dialogue", we looked at the strategies for achieving such a net-zero goal in Switzerland, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt, and at the University of Basel. In addition, we discussed the economic and individual implications of Net Zero. We want to thank the speakers for their engaging presentations, and the audience for their interesting input to our discussion.

7.2.23 Symposium "Future of Sustainability and Social Sciences in honor of Prof. Paul Burger"

The symposium is held in honor of Prof. Paul Burger, who has made outstanding contributions in sustainability and social science research, ranging from theoretical contributions on the concept of sustainability and the governance of sustainability-oriented transformation processes to empirical research, in particular in relation to sustainable energy transitions. In spring 2023, Paul Burger will leave active university life behind and start into his well-deserved retirement.
We invite you to participate in the symposium and to celebrate with Paul Burger and his former colleagues and friends with an Apéro Riche. Due to limited seats, we kindly ask you to register with the link.

15.12.22 - Nuclear Renaissance: Technology, Society and Sustainable Development

This workshop is scheduled as a second in a row: A first workshop in spring 2022 was organized to advance an interdisciplinary exchange between techno-economic and socio-political approaches to nuclear technology and a sustainable energy transition. This second workshop advances these discussions by a focus on sustainable development more broadly: Contributions to the workshop should work towards, in one way or another, a descriptive and normative basis for a critical and evaluative diagnosis of nuclear technology’s societal embeddedness and consequences – a diagnosis which we pose at the heart of a sustainable perspective.

22.11.22 - Crisis winter 22/23: Gas, electricity, costs - What's in store for us? (in German)

The three current crises in gas, electricity and energy prices are of concern to energy suppliers and consumers. The federal government and the cantons assess the energy crisis as a major risk for Switzerland, especially towards the end of winter, with potentially serious consequences for the economy and society. But how realistic are worst-case scenarios really? What is the background to the developments? What options are there for Switzerland in dealing with the crises?
In the event "Krisenwinter 22/23: Gas, Strom, Kosten – Was kommt auf uns zu?” organized by the Sustainable Future research network and the Fachstelle Nachhaltigkeit of the University of Basel, we will shed light on and discuss these questions from the perspective of science and practice.

The event takes place at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel (Spitalstrasse 41, 4056 Basel), room U1.131, from 17:00 to 19:30 and is followed by an Apéro.

21.11.22 - Alpine value landscapes and energy infrastructures

Previously largely undeveloped mountain areas are the focus of infrastructure development for the energy transition. Due to their remoteness, alpine open spaces are hardly present in public awareness. In the context of the energy transition, these very open spaces are becoming exploitable resources - with potentially serious consequences for alpine landscapes.

The University of Basel opens its doors to interested students from the 5th to 7th grade. The aim is to give them an insight into the professional world. We offer them an insight into the profession of a "researcher in the field of sustainability".

09/16/2022 - Future dialog on sustainability: Visions for sustainable mobility

What does the future of mobility in Switzerland look like?
Social and economic trends such as the increase in home offices, further urbanization and an aging population influence our mobility just as much as technological developments in transport modes and fuels, individual behavioral changes and political measures. In the Sustainability Dialogue of the Sustainable Future research network, we will develop and discuss visions for sustainable mobility with researchers from the University of Basel and experts from business, administration and society.

The event will take place on September 16, 2022 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Kollegienhaus of the University of Basel.

May 24, 2022 - Overshoot will end, by design or disaster. Which one will we choose?

The Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity's demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. In 2021, it fell on July 29. Eventually, overshoot will come to an end. What we can choose is whether it will end by design or disaster. Join Dr. Mathis Wackernagel (President of Global Footprint Network) and Prof. Dr. Aya Kachi (Professor for International Political Economy and Energy Policy, University of Basel) in a conversation about their journeys, their personal motivation to dedicate their professional lives to this topic, and what they have learned from their successes and failures.

The event will take place on May 24, 2022, 17:00 - 18:30 in the WWZ Auditorium, at Peter-Merian-Weg 6.

April 29, 2022 - Smart Sustainable Regions Workshop

The Sustainable Future research network is organizing an internal workshop on the topic of smart sustainable regions at the University of Basel. The aim of the workshop is to identify topics and interests in the field of smart regional contexts and to define intersections in order to create a joint project and/or a joint scientific review paper.

The workshop will take place on April 29, 2022 from 2:00pm-4:00pm at Kollegienhaus, Seminar Room 212.

May 11, 2022 - "Nuclear Renaissance: Technology, Society and Sustainable Development" Workshop

To further advance a sustainability-oriented analysis of nuclear technology, the Sustainable Future research network is organizing a workshop on "Nuclear Renaissance: Technology, Society and Sustainable Development." The workshop will be held on May 11, 2022, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Kollegienhaus, Multipurpose Room 035.

October 27-28, 2021 - Smart Suisse in Basel

Smart Suisse will take place on October 27 & 28, 2021.
SmartSuisse is a strategy congress with accompanying exhibition, which deals with the most promising smart city topics. Unique are the mix between strategy and concrete solutions, as well as the cross-industry approach with the aim to connect the public sector with business and science more strongly. SmartSuisse is aimed at all stakeholders who want to actively and sustainably shape the urban life of tomorrow. The fourth edition of SmartSuisse includes a symposium and a congress, which now includes various parallel series on Governance, Mobility, Energy & Environment and Infrastructure.

September 28, 2021 - Uni konkret - Experience science

How can electricity markets be adapted to ensure a secure and cost-efficient supply in the future? How can we achieve a sustainable lifestyle without sacrificing quality of life? For years, a team of scientists at the University of Basel has been working in the field of sustainability research on economic, legal and social science aspects of the energy transition.

On September 28, sustainability researcher Dr. Annika Sohre and economist Prof. Dr. Frank C. Krysiak will take stock at the "Uni konkret" event organized by the Basel Chamber of Commerce.

November 11, 2021 - Future Day "Sustainability Kids Day

February 3, 2022 - Sustainability Science Dialogue

Together with Swiss institutions, the Sustainability Research Initiative (SRI) invites experts to exchange ideas on sustainability research priorities. The "Sustainability Science Dialogue" event series serves to discuss the topics proposed by the Swiss academies and to draft concrete future research needs and cooperation projects.
