Trinationale Summer School "Testing Transdisciplinary Formats - Using the Example of Climate Adaptation in Cities and Communities".

Trinationale Summer School

The trinational Summer School offers 20 PhD candidates from different disciplines the opportunity to interactively test innovative formats and methods in transdisciplinary research.

The sustainable development of our society requires not only knowledge generation and the development of scientific approaches to solutions. In order for scientific findings to be successfully implemented, it is necessary to address the societal framework conditions. This requires close cooperation between science and society. To design and structure this cooperation scientifically and at the same time practically is the subject of transdisciplinary research.

The Summer School enables the participants to get to know and to test different transdisciplinary formats and methods on the basis of a case study: climate adaptation of a district of the city of Emmendingen (north of Freiburg). As the German-French-Swiss Upper Rhine region is particularly heat-stressed and will be affected by even higher temperatures and frequent as well as long-lasting hot spells in the future, cities and municipalities are challenged to quickly develop strategies and measures of adaptation despite existing uncertainty. The PhD candidates will address this issue concretely and in direct cooperation with the city of Emmendingen.

20 PhD candidates from the Eucor universities (Universities of Basel, Freiburg, Haute-Alsace and Strasbourg as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) from all natural sciences, social sciences and humanities who are interested in transdisciplinary research and would like to further their education in this field can participate. Prior thematic knowledge is not required. The main working language will be English.
